As the students explored the toys in the classroom, the dinosaurs became a favourite of all. The children would create fantasy stories to go along with their play or choose the mini manipulatives to sort at the math centre. As their play progressed however, some children would try to find materials around the room to become a volcano or setting for their dinosaur adventures. At circle time one day, we invited the children to brainstorm about ideas for creating a dino playscape at the discovery table. We had explored many books about dinosaurs at this point and many children knew about dinosaurs from movies they had seen as well. In the photos below, you will see how the students' ideas came alive as they engaged on a joint art project of creating the setting where the dinosaurs roamed for a few weeks following. Some children made eggs and nests, others created trees and volcanoes. Fun was had as they shared their creations and practiced some fine motor skills: cutting with scissors, learning about the best glue to use, exploring a variety of art materials and drawing what their imaginations were thinking!
